All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. On earth the most common states are solids liquids and gases. Planet earth is made of matter and so are all the stars planets and moons in the universe. We call these forms states of matter.

In science matter is the term for any type of material. The mass of an object is the amount of material that makes up the object. Anything that takes up space is called matter. A molecule is the smallest particle of matter into which a body can be divided without losing its identity.

A mass of matter is any portion of matter appreciable by the senses. Masses molecules and atoms. A bowling ball for example has more mass than a beach ball. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Matter takes on different forms depending on how the atoms are arranged. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. The word matter is sometimes used to refer to a pure substance. At the most fundamental level matter is composed of elementary particles known as quarks and leptons the class of elementary particles that includes electrons.

Three divisions of matter are recognized in science. Air water rocks and even people are examples of matter. Matter is everything around you atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter.
